✨ Volunteer Spotlight ✨

Stefanie Elbing has been a volunteer with us for the past month. She participated in our Full time Residential volunteer program. This is her last week and are sad to see her go but wish her all the luck in her future.

Where are you from?
“Berlin, Germany.”

What do you do for a living?
“I have quit my old job as an accountant and I will soon start a new apprenticeship as a nurse.”

What drew you to FAR and why did you want to volunteer?
“Actually, I had already chosen an organization in Africa for my volunteer work. But when I heard about FAR, it was clear to me that this is exactly what I wanted to do as a volunteer.”

Who is your favorite animal and why?
“All animals at FAR are awesome. But I will especially miss Irma, Destiny, Barry and Yukon.”

What memory do you think will stick with you from your experiences here at FAR?
“Generally the work with the animals. I am glad that I was able to be so close to the animals for a month and that I was allowed to work with people who love animals as much as I do.”

What have you learned from volunteering here that you can apply to your daily life?
“If you enjoy what you do, it doesn't feel like work.”

Where did your interest in animals first start?
“I have always been interested in animals. I grew up in a small village and as a child I always had animals around me.”

What's your favorite part of the day when working?
“The feeding of the animals.”

What are your hobbies?
“Sports, cooking, travelling and spending time with friends.”

Our Full time residential volunteer program allows those who live far away and/or don’t qualify for an internship to get animal care experience. US and international volunteers can pay in advanced for food and lodging and stay full time (1+ months) and get the full experience and training without any prior experience. ✨

Horses need to ‘go to the dentist’ too!🦷

Our horse Chief got a dental cleaning Monday by our Equine veterinarian, Jackie. Horses teeth continuously grow. And the frequent amount of grinding they do in order to chew their food can cause a lot of wear on their teeth. So, they need to be filed down and re-shaped in order to keep their teeth lined up properly. All the plaque is then scraped off and their mouth is rinsed so they’re all clean!

Chief was a very good boy for us and recovered nicely! We use light sedation for this process so they can still walk and hold themselves upright but they are relaxed enough to safely work in their mouths.
