For the first time sine 1918, a solar eclipse will shadow the United States

Eclipse, one of Forest Animal Rescue’s rescued wolf hybrids is convinced that this day is named after HIM!

This eclipse is special – it is a coast-to-coast solar eclipse, nicknamed the “Great American Eclipse” and will be the first of its kind seen in 99 years.

Now is your chance, if you miss this one, the next total solar eclipse in North American will be on April 8, 2024 and there will be fewer states in the path of totality.

Enjoy this amazing sight, but be safe – remember to avoid looking directly at the sun or you may damage your eyesight.

How can you see it safely? Use Eclipse glasses – if they are sold out in your area (as they have been in our area for weeks), you can try welding goggles – here is a link with more information

Since their arrival at Forest Animal Rescue just before Christmas, Cody and Oatmeal have been playing nonstop. They are incredibly happy with their new home in sunny Florida…and they haven’t even experienced the best part yet!

They are loving their pool, climbing platform and the ball that we gave them, but they will soon be out of their quarantine habitat and into a wooded 4-acre compound with three other black bears, Dolly, Elizabeth Rose and B-Bear!

The hard-working Alternative Break students take a pledge to perform community service instead of joining their partying classmates during spring break. They are a remarkable group of volunteers and have always accomplished amazing things for the animals

First to arrive were 10 students from the UCF for a week. The following week 15 hard workers from OSU and 10 more from UK joined forces to pick up where UCF left off.

They planted trees and thick landscaping to provide shade and visual barriers for the animals at the sanctuary. Then they dug holes 4-5 feet deep and helped to install some new 8′ tall fencing around the building site for our new Bob Barker Animal Care Building.

Last but certainly not least!

The University of Delaware Alternative Break group consisted of 40 students who worked extremely hard. They tried to complete the bear habitat and came very close…but we ran out of time. The completion of the project is finally within our grasp – thanks to the hard working volunteers from Delaware!

Thank you to all of our amazing Alternative Break volunteers – we couldn’t do it without you!

We will be organizing groups of local volunteers to work on specific days to finish the project – contact us about volunteering if you would like to help!

Of course, we can still use everyone’s help to pay for the materials that we need to complete the project, all donations are tax deductible!

The next day, we had 20 people show up to help out, both regular volunteers and lots of new ones! They worked in the heat of the day and right through a heavy rain storm, finishing up as the sky cleared. What a dedicated group.

The hard working gang included the most AMAZING group from Westbrook Service Corporation once again. They donated the materials and  brought trucks, a trencher, tools and a whole crew of professionals to help us! They have come through for us like this on multiple occasions, we really appreciate their dedication to the animals.

The Westbrook group trenched and ran power lines and water lines to all of the carnivores, running main lines from all the way at the far end of the 80 acres. We will now have electrical outlets and lights available along with hose bibs and places to connect our automatic waterers. As soon as we have full-time power we will be ready to go! (still on generators for now)

At the same time, we had five people from Animal Warriors join us again to work on habitat construction along with new volunteers who came on their own and our new intern. We are always so impressed by the generosity of our volunteers, giving of themselves when they have such busy lives.

At the end of the day everyone had been hot, rained on, chilled, hot again and wound up feeling really good about everything we accomplished. I”m sure everyone slept well last night. When you see the animals relaxing and thriving, enjoying their new homes it makes all the hard work so worthwhile.
