With all of the quarantine and stress of the Coronavirus pandemic, we needed a little good news; Simba did too. We were happy to help this beautiful cat; the opportunity lifted our spirits too!

We agreed to accept provide Simba with lifetime care at our sanctuary. We picked him up this morning and brought him straight back to his forever home.

He is in a quarantine habitat, for now, not only for Coronavirus reasons but as a standard practice any time we rescue a new animal. He can see, hear, and smell his future serval playmates, but they are ‘social distancing’ for a few weeks before they can meet up close.

Since Simba has already been neutered, we simply need to wait until the proper time has passed and he is cleared by our veterinarian. Then we can start introducing him to Kenya, Kito, and Saka, the other servals at Forest Animal Rescue. They are going to love having another friend!

We received the results of her bloodwork last night, showing that she was suffering from acute septicemia that was not previously apparent as well as some preexisting liver damage had not yet created symptoms. With these complications amidst everything else, she passed away in her sleep overnight.

We did absolutely everything our team and veterinarians could do to save her. From the swift reaction to her injuries to providing all of the veterinary care needed (regardless of the expense) – it just wasn’t enough.

Timber was a treasured member of our sanctuary family and her loss hits all of us very hard. We truly appreciate everyone’s support that helped us to do absolutely everything we could do. 

One of the hardest things about running a sanctuary is outliving the animals we rescue. Even after 22 years, losing one of the animals never gets easier, they are all members of the family.

This poor girl is clearly still in pain, but she is getting her medications on schedule and we are hopeful that things will continue to improve as planned.

She is scheduled for another veterinary exam on Thursday – we will keep you posted.

We are building an expansion to the wolf habitat to allow Timber and Yukon to each have a large space of their own. They will share a wall so they can be close toto one another if they wish. Since they obviously disagree about who is in charge, they won’t live in the same habitat as we had hoped.

After weeks of living next to one another and showing signs of wanting to be together, we cautiously introduced them. It went well on the first day. However, on the second day, things took a rapid turn for the worse.

THEY SUDDENLY FOUGHT. Yukon bit Timber on the throat and severed her windpipe and neck muscles. 

We needed to act immediately to try and save her life and we did! Now we owe $3,500 for her vet bills.

Tony had a mass on his elbow (fibrosarcoma) that affected his mobility and was nonsurgical, he got along pretty well for a while, but eventually, it took over.

It was clear to us that it was his end, and we had to say goodbye to a wonderful animal. He lived a long life for a tiger and celebrated his 18th birthday this month.

Tony and his brother Roy were rescued together in 2010 by FAR from a backyard in Texas. It was a hard journey back to Florida, but it was worth it. Tony has had 10 years of peace here with us. He initially shared a habitat with his brother Roy, who is still doing well.

In 2017, Tony was introduced to another female tiger Zoey who he was cagemates with until she passed away in 2019 from old age. Tony loved boxes, balls, and other enrichment items. But his all-time favorite thing to do was to spend time in his wooded acreage napping, belly up, underneath the trees. He was such a unique tiger and will be missed by many.

Our newest arrival has made it to the sanctuary safely. Her name was chosen by popular vote and we love it!

Destiny is in a smaller portion of her habitat for the night. We will give her a day to adjust to her new surroundings before opening up the rest of her habitat to climb into the trees. It looks like she will be at home quickly!

The rehab facility gave us the tiny collar they cut off from her when she came in. She was obviously a released or escaped ‘pet’

She had grown since the collar was put on her and it would have choked her as she grew. She was never trained to hunt, so she was literally starving. She was extremely thankful to have the restrictive collar cut away.

Now she will have the best care possible, for the rest of her life at Forest Animal Rescue. She will never worry about starving because she doesn’t know how to hunt. She will receive wholesome, nutritious food , prepared by people who are watching out for her.

Destiny will have excellent veterinary care and eventually have playmates of her own kind in a non-breeding, true sanctuary setting.

Destiny already seems to realize how lucky she is. She came out of hiding to explore and greet us (from a distance) only minutes after being turned out into her habitat.
