We have worked together for two long years to move two Patagonian Pumas (cougars) from a closed zoo in Argentina to Forest Animal Rescue to live the rest of their lives in peaceful sanctuary. They finally arrived on U.S. soil.

From the Beginning: A zoo in Rawson, Argentina was closed in 2015 as a result of public pressure. As other animals were being placed with facilities in their own country, two pumas that had spent their entire lives together at this zoo had nowhere to go.

Two rescue groups in Argentina helped to organize the placement of the animals, IFAW offered their assistance and approached Forest Animal Rescue to ask if we could accept these two beautiful cats for lifetime care at our sanctuary. Pat Craig from the Wild Animal Sanctuary was organizing the transportation of other animals from Argentina and offered his assistance with the complicated permitting and logistics of an international transfer.

The team was established – these magnificent cats would be moved to Florida to live the rest of their lives together at Forest Animal Rescue.

On August 24, after two years of determination and teamwork, the pumas arrived safely in Miami. The transport crates were loaded into Forest Animal Rescue’s air conditioned trailer and driven five hours north to their forever home at the sanctuary in the Ocala National Forest.

We have stepped up to provide lifetime care for these cougars that have endured so much, but providing a spacious habitat, diet and ongoing veterinary care is very expensive.

We are raising $10,000 to be sure they have what they need at the sanctuary for the first year, their initial care will be the most involved.

For the first time sine 1918, a solar eclipse will shadow the United States

Eclipse, one of Forest Animal Rescue’s rescued wolf hybrids is convinced that this day is named after HIM!

This eclipse is special – it is a coast-to-coast solar eclipse, nicknamed the “Great American Eclipse” and will be the first of its kind seen in 99 years.

Now is your chance, if you miss this one, the next total solar eclipse in North American will be on April 8, 2024 and there will be fewer states in the path of totality.

Enjoy this amazing sight, but be safe – remember to avoid looking directly at the sun or you may damage your eyesight.

How can you see it safely? Use Eclipse glasses – if they are sold out in your area (as they have been in our area for weeks), you can try welding goggles – here is a link with more information

The painful waiting game is finally over. After a tedious process of designing the building, followed by 8 1/2 months struggling through red tape to obtain the Marion County building permit, we are finally allowed to build!

We brought in fill, cleared trees, built up our driveway, moved our access gates and continued planning, but we couldn’t start construction until the permit was approved. The minute we were allowed, we couldn’t wait to break ground.

The construction has been underway for only 4 weeks and look how far along we are already!

From the beginning:

The Bob Barker Animal Care Building will ensure continuing high standards of veterinary and nutritional care for the animals at Forest Animal Rescue as the sanctuary continues to grow. With the improved capacity for care, the sanctuary will be able to accept even the tiniest, most fragile orphaned bear cubs for rehabilitation and release – while maintaining our high standards of care for the sanctuary’s 100+ nonreleasable rescued animals. It will also provide more working space for our interns, local and international volunteers as they learn proper methods of caring for wild animals in captivity.

In 2016, retired game show host, Bob Barker approved a $100,000 gift from his foundation to set the project in motion. We immediately began the design and planning process, but nothing seems to ever go smoothly the first time.

When we submitted our final design to the Marion County Building Department we discovered that we would need to revise our special use permit, requiring public zoning hearings and even more time. Revisions to the plans were repeatedly submitted, rejected, resubmitted…we were pulling our hair out…

Finally – Marion County hired Jeffrey Camden as the Building Department Director. Brand new on the job, we asked him to look at our project – The permit was approved that day!
